Natural Remedies for Flu Symptoms

Drink plenty of fluids

Drinking water and other fluids is important when you have the flu. Water helps to keep your nose, mouth, and throat moist. This helps your body get rid of built-up mucus and phlegm.

Get plenty of rest

  • It’s important to rest and get more sleep when you have the flu. Sleeping can help boost your immune system. This helps your body fight off the virus. Cancel your usual routine and make sleep a priority to help get you back on your feet.

Rinse with salt water

  • A warm water and salt rinse (sometimes called a salt water gargle) can soothe a sore throat. It can also help to clear mucus.

Use a humidifier

  • The flu virus survives longer in dry indoor air. This may make the virus spread more easily — colder outdoor temperatures generally lower humidity in the air. Indoor air can get dry from heating and air conditioning use.

Eat foods rich in Vitamin C

  • Food is the best way to get all your nutrients. Along with vitamin C, you’ll get a host of other vitamins, minerals, and fibre if you’re eating fruits, vegetables, or other produce. Examples of foods containing Vitamin C are Oranges, Limes, Lemon, Broccoli, and Green & Red Pepper.

When to see a doctor when you have flu

  • Seek medical attention if you experience a high fever (feeling excessively hot or cold, sweating or experiencing chills) and if your symptoms do not improve after one week despite using natural flu remedies.

When to see a doctor when you have flu

  • Seek medical attention if you have the flu and have a chronic condition such as asthma, heart disease, lung conditions, diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, stroke, epilepsy and sickle cell anemia.
