Let’s Talk About Gingivitis!
Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease (also known as periodontal disease). The good news? It’s preventable and reversible if caught early!
Common Signs to Watch Out For:
- Red, swollen, or tender gums
- Gums that bleed easily when brushing or flossing
- Persistent bad breath (halitosis)
- Gum irritation or discomfort
- Swelling around the base of the teeth
What Causes It?
The most common cause is plaque build-up — a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth when oral hygiene is neglected. If left long enough, plaque hardens into calculus (tartar), which cannot be removed by brushing alone.
Other risk factors that make gingivitis worse include:
- Smoking
- Chronic stress
- Certain medications
- Mouth breathing during sleep
- Crooked teeth or misaligned dental restorations
How to Prevent & Treat Gingivitis:
- Brush your teeth twice daily for at least 2 minutes
- Floss daily to remove debris between teeth
- Visit your dentist for a check-up & professional cleaning.
- Maintain a healthy, balanced diet
- Avoid tobacco use
Remember: Healthy gums don’t bleed! Stay consistent with your oral hygiene — your smile depends on it.
